Scientist-secretary gets tougher punishment for fatally hitting girl

The developer of secret systems for protecting strategically important enterprises will go to prison for a fatal hit-and-run of a child. The first sentence was not related to imprisonment, but the appellate court considered the punishment too lenient.

As MK reported at the time, the tragedy occurred on May 24, 2024, at about 1:30 p.m. on Main Street in the Vostochny settlement. A 59-year-old scientist, a candidate of technical sciences, was driving a BMW at a low speed and braked before a pedestrian crossing, letting pedestrians pass. He did not stop at all and, having waited for the people to pass, continued driving. The man apparently did not notice that an 8-year-old girl on a scooter drove onto the crossing to his right in the direction of travel. He hit the child and dragged her for several meters. The little girl received severe injuries and died in hospital that same evening. The driver was never able to explain why he did not see the child. The man was sober, had been driving to work in traffic jams for more than two hours that day and was apparently simply tired by the end of the journey.

The deceased girl was from a large family, and had been allowed to go for a walk alone before. The car owner compensated his relatives for the damage. In addition, he became a laureate of the award for developing a unique set of devices to protect defense plants from outside attacks, was awarded medals by the Ministry of Defense, and was characterized as purely positive. The Izmailovsky Court took these circumstances into account and sentenced him to a suspended two-year term with a ban on driving a car for the same period. However, the Moscow City Court's appellate court considered that the crime committed by the scientist was too serious, and there could be no talk of a suspended sentence. As a result, the car owner was sentenced to 2 years in a penal colony.
