Eleven Baltic Sea swimming areas have been closed due to a cyanobacterial bloom. The warning applies to popular beaches in northern Poland, where water temperatures are currently around 20 degrees Celsius.
According to data published on Sunday in the Bathing Service of the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate, nine bathing areas in the Pomeranian Voivodeship are closed due to cyanobacterial blooms.
These are:
- four bathing areas in Krynica Morska (Bulwar Słoneczny 1, Korczaka, Bulwar Słoneczny 2 and Port),
- swimming pool in Kąty Rybackie,
- "Mała Plaża" swimming pool in Hel,
- three bathing areas in Jastarnia (Leśna, Zdrojowa and Nadmorska-Plażowa).
In the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, red flags fly at the bathing areas in Stepnica and Trzebież on the Szczecin Lagoon.
On Sunday, the sea temperature ranges from 18.6 to 21 degrees Celsius.
Cyanobacteria are among the oldest organisms on Earth. They demonstrate a remarkable ability to adapt to diverse environmental conditions. They occur in both saltwater and inland waters.
The seasonality of mass blooms of cyanobacteria is a natural phenomenon occurring in nature.
Factors that influence the appearance of cyanobacterial water blooms include:
- high water temperature,
- presence of biological salts (especially phosphates),
- light wind,
- no precipitation.
Bathing in water contaminated with cyanobacteria can cause adverse reactions, ranging from rashes to reddened eyes. Drinking may cause gastrointestinal symptoms , including diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Current information on bathing water levels can be found on the GIS information website.
