Sapri hosts three days of Pisacane celebrations: theater, parades, and an award in memory of the Risorgimento hero.

The celebrations for Carlo Pisacane are back in Sapri. And they return with the same punctuality as always. Each year, the Municipality and the Study and Documentation Center named after the Risorgimento hero renew their commitment: to ensure that the memory of the 1857 landing is not lost in a faded memory. Three days, from August 22 to 24, 2025, including history, theater, music, and institutional ceremonies, the event "Traces of Revolutions in the Lands of Bussento – Beyond Pisacane" is funded by the European Union through the European Social Fund (ESF) as part of the POR Campania ESF 2014-2020. It begins on August 22nd at 7:00 PM with "Pisacane: History on the Move," an urban trek led by Ambra Scarpitta that takes participants to locations around the city linked to the epic Risorgimento. At 10:00 PM, the Villa Comunale becomes the center of the reenactment with "The Night Before the Landing": scenes from everyday life, readings, and novels evoke the anticipation and tension of those hours. During the evening, the book "Pisacane from Sapri to Sanza" by Cesare Pifano will be presented, with greetings from Mayor Antonio Gentile and a discussion with school principal Corrado Limongi. The afternoon of Saturday, August 23rd, will be dedicated to the historical parade (7:00 p.m.). Costumed groups will march through the city streets: the "Città della Spigolatrice," the "Società di Danza Salerno – Contrapasso," the Cavensi flag-wavers, the Monte Cerviero drummers, the San Giovanni a Piro City Band, the Ente Montecastello historical parade, and the San Fantino Ranch equestrian group. At 10:00 p.m., the stage shifts to San Francesco beach for the theatrical performance "Pisacane's Last Doubt," written and directed by Paolo Capozzo. On stage, Maurizio Picariello plays Carlo Pisacane, Elena Spiniello plays the Gleaner, Antonio Lippiello, Chiara Picariello, Antonio Colucci, Alfonso Grassi, Salvatore Iermano, and Capozzo himself plays Major De Liguoro. Carlo Maria Todini will also appear, playing the Sailor and singing the songs dedicated to the "Captain." A choral show, with sets designed by Giovanni Vitetta, Salvatore Cosentino, and Vincenzo Cernicchiaro, costumes by the Arteteca association, and general organization by Matteo Martino.
The final act is institutional and solemn. On Sunday, August 24, at 9:30 pm, the award ceremony for the Carlo Pisacane International Prize will be held on Viale della Spigolatrice. Receiving the award will be distinguished figures from the worlds of academia, economics, and journalism: Virgilio D'Antonio, rector-elect of the University of Salerno; Mario Leone, director of the Altiero Spinelli Institute; Gianluca Timpone, economist and university professor; Flavia Fratello, journalist and television host for La7; and Francesco Castiello, recipient of the posthumous award. The evening, hosted by Maria Rosaria Sica, will feature musical performances by the duo Claudio e Diana.
"Every year we renew this reenactment," explains Tourism Councilor Amalia Morabito, "because Carlo Pisacane doesn't just belong to the past: he's a figure who continues to speak to the present. Sapri feels a duty to preserve and pass on his legacy, transforming memory into an opportunity for culture, growth, and collective participation."
