Scientists from the US and UK have published the results of an extensive study on the state of the World Ocean in the journal Global Change Biology. Working with ice cores, analyzing the chemical composition of seawater and performing computer modeling, the specialists assessed the dynamics of ecosystems and the level of biodiversity, comparing the data obtained with historical records over the past several centuries.
The findings were alarming: approximately 40% of the surface and about 60% of the deep ocean layers have become more acidic, with the main factor being growing concentrations of CO₂ in the atmosphere. The researchers emphasize that slowing down and even reversing the acidification process is only possible with a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. In this regard, they insist on immediate measures to reduce industrial pollution and minimize anthropogenic impact on nature.
Previously, remains of flora and fauna 200 million years old were found in Western Siberia.
