In Russia, there has been a significant increase in the number of patients seeking medical help for sexsomnia, a rare sleep disorder in which a person unconsciously exhibits sexual activity.

As somnology specialists explained to SHOT , such requests were previously virtually non-existent. This is explained by the population's insufficient awareness of the existence of such a disorder.

Sexsomnia is a type of sleepwalking. The condition is characterized by the fact that during sleep, certain areas of the brain remain active. According to doctors, the sleeper may involuntarily masturbate, show sexual initiatives towards a partner or engage in sexual contact, sometimes with elements of aggression. After waking up, memories of what happened are usually absent.

Experts point out that triggers of the condition can be increased anxiety, stressful situations, sleep disorders and alcohol consumption. Given the prevalence of these factors among modern people, doctors have begun to register, albeit few, but stable requests. In the treatment of sexsomnia, along with somnologists, psychologists and psychiatrists usually participate.
