Sparkling or still water? Nutri reveals the healthiest and most hydrating option

Sparkling or still water? Nutri reveals the healthiest and most hydrating option

In the quest for a healthier lifestyle, a common question arises when it comes to hydration: which water should you choose—carbonated or still ? Nutritionist Guilherme Lopes believes both options perform well in keeping the body hydrated . The difference, he says, lies more in composition and individual preference than in effectiveness.

"Sparkling water is simply regular water that has been added to carbon dioxide (CO₂)," explains the nutritionist. This carbonation can occur naturally, in mineral springs, or be artificially produced. Despite the difference in the process, the expert states that nutritionally, both are very similar . "Electrolytes and minerals may vary depending on the source, but this does not significantly alter their function in the body."

Same hydration, personal choice

According to Guilherme, both sparkling and still water can effectively replenish fluids in the body. "Choosing between them depends on personal preference, as the important thing is to maintain adequate fluid intake throughout the day."

And he reinforces: "Effective hydration depends fundamentally on the total volume of water consumed. The form—carbonated or still—is less important than regularly drinking sufficient volumes to keep the body well hydrated."

Digestion and sensitivity

Another point that often raises questions is the impact of sparkling water on digestion. According to the nutritionist, who works with the Mantevida group, for most people, it doesn't interfere—quite the opposite. "It can even help with protein digestion, as its slight acidity activates digestive enzymes," he says. However, he adds a caveat: in people with gastrointestinal sensitivity , the gas can cause discomfort or a feeling of temporary bloating.

Contraindications?

The recommendation is caution, but without alarmism. " Pregnant women or children have no specific contraindications to sparkling water," says Guilherme. Still, he suggests that children get into the habit of drinking still water to avoid sensitization to carbonated beverages. Pregnant women with digestive discomfort or sensitivity may also benefit from opting for still water.

Ally in reducing soft drinks

Besides hydrating, sparkling water can play a strategic role in your diet . According to the nutritionist, it offers a texture similar to soda, but without the sugar or calories. "This makes it a great alternative to reducing sugary drink consumption." He cites studies that indicate a decrease in soda purchases in families that increase their water consumption—including sparkling water. This substitution helps reduce empty calorie intake, improves oral health, and facilitates tasty, but healthier, hydration.
