Espinho Auditorium will host 16 shows until the end of the year

The Espinho Auditorium will host 16 shows until the end of the year , including concerts by American pianist Bob James, his fellow countryman drummer John Hollenbeck, Swiss singer Yumi Ito and Portuguese singer Marta Ren.

The programmer of this concert hall in the Aveiro district and Porto Metropolitan Area reveals that the programme initially planned for the last quarter of 2025 also included a show with composer and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal, for which the ticket office had already opened and quickly sold out, but this schedule had to be redefined due to the death of the Brazilian artist on September 13, at the age of 89 (which also included stops in Braga, Lisbon and Viseu).

"We have the best memories of Hermeto Pascoal's visit to Espinho in 2018 and the two concerts he gave at that time, one with his sextet and the other with the Espinho Jazz Orchestra. He was a genius, one of the greatest names in the history of music, and it was with great joy that we prepared to welcome him back. That will no longer be possible, but his legacy is eternal," programmer André Gomes told Lusa.

The Auditorium's final program now focuses on music, dance and the multidisciplinary performance of American Meredith Monk, whose performance on October 14th has already sold out the audience, as is the case with the national debut of Michelle David & The True-tones and the return of Kandace Springs, in partnership with the Espinho Classical Orchestra.

“This quarter will allow us to further establish the Espinho Auditorium as a venue that aims to provide its audience with original and distinctive experiences,” emphasizes André Gomes.

The last quarter's programme kicks off this Friday with a concert bringing together Dutch violinist Noa Wildschut and the Espinho Classical Orchestra, under the direction of young Polish conductor Pawel Kapula, to explore repertoire by Max Bruch, Mendelssohn and Mieczyslaw Weinberg.

Two Portuguese groups will follow: on October 4th, the Ludovice Ensemble, with baroque compositions that marked the atmosphere of Paris in the time of Louis XV, and on the 10th, the duo formed by baritone André Baleiro and pianist David Santos, with “Paisagens Marítimas” based on works by Brahms, Fauré, Debussy, Benjamin Britten, Rebecca Clarke, Freitas Branco and Lopes-Graça.

On the 18th, the stage will be for Marta Ren and the Espinho Jazz Orchestra, with what André Gomes defines as “an unprecedented program in tribute to the North American singer and composer Otis Redding”, and on the 31st, there will be “the absolute debut in Portugal of the legendary keyboardist Bob James”, who, winner of two Grammy awards, for some is “the godfather of smooth jazz” and for others “a hip-hop icon, since the samples of his music played a fundamental role in the foundation of rap”.

In addition to the sold-out session with Kandace Springs, November will bring four other proposals: on the 14th, the return of pianist and singer Yumi Ito, who, as part of Misty Fest, demonstrates why she is considered "a world reference in vocal improvisation, encompassing art-pop, jazz, and neoclassical"; on the 21st, Brazilian Castello Branco, who joins the Ensemble of the Espinho Professional School of Music to reinterpret themes from his discography; on the 28th, the show "Take," in which Companhia Instável presents with "cinematic" detail a contemporary dance creation by São Castro and António M. Cabrita; and on the 30th, the Portuguese premiere of the recital for traverso and strings by British-Australian Liane Sadler and German Elias Conrad, based on themes by Portuguese Renaissance composer and theorist Vicente Lusitano.

On December 6th, the focus shifts to Mimo's Dixie Band, whose family-friendly performance “Circus Time” features 1920s music, circus arts, and comedy, and on the 12th, the Espinho Jazz Orchestra will be on stage with American composer and drummer John Hollenbeck, who André Gomes considers “one of the most innovative and unique creators of contemporary jazz.”

The last concerts of the quarter will be performed, on December 19th and 20th, by another collective that has sprouted in the Auditorium, specifically the Espinho Classical Orchestra, which, under the baton of the young Austrian conductor Katharina Wincor, has chosen for its Christmas concert “Orchestral Dances” that will evoke “from the hedonism of the Viennese salons of the last years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to traditional Slovak music”.
