Not a city break at all. This is how Poles will spend their May Day holiday abroad

May Day is just around the corner, and those who took May 2 off will be able to rest for up to 4 days. Although ticket prices are rising on popular dates, this does not discourage Poles from traveling abroad and opening the summer season in higher temperatures.
May Day Abroad? Beach Instead of MuseumThe Polish Tourism Organisation has checked how Poles will spend the May Day holiday abroad. Not everyone decides to travel at this time. 43% of respondents plan to travel between 1 and 4 May or similar, the same as last year. These are usually domestic trips (21% of respondents will choose them), while 7% will travel abroad. Although this is not a large group, there is an interesting difference.
It seems that a small number of days off is more conducive to city breaks, i.e. short visits to attractions in cities . This year's results of the May Day plans survey clearly show that Poles will go to the warm seaside at this time (38% of indications) . Only in second place are cities, chosen by 28% of those planning trips abroad. 16% of tourists will go to the mountains abroad. It is worth adding here that a stay at the seaside and a city break can be combined (e.g. in those European cities that we can fly to from Poland ). However, warmer water in the sea at this time of year will have to be sought in more exotic destinations.
Longer stay abroadExpenditures on flights and stays abroad are associated with planning longer trips. A holiday abroad during the May holiday will last longer on average than the one planned in Poland. Most often, a May holiday abroad will include 4 to 7 nights (35% of responses) or 1-3 nights (22%). At the same time, almost every fifth respondent in this group declares that they will go abroad for more than 14 nights, which means that tourists choose a longer holiday before the start of the high season.
Tourists abroad indicate primarily visiting tourist and cultural attractions (39%) and rest and relaxation (38%) as the main purpose. Every tenth respondent in this group will use the first days of May to visit relatives and friends. Slightly over four in ten Poles (43%) are going abroad with their husbands, wives or partners. Every fourth respondent (25%) plans to go with their entire family, including children.
The study was carried out on behalf of the Polish Tourism Organisation by PBS using the CAWI method. The study sample consisted of two parts: 1) a representative nationwide sample of Poles aged 18-65; sample size: N=1000 and 2) people who are planning to go on a May Day holiday this year (2025); N=1000.Read also: From Poland to Greece for PLN 244.
