Tom Cruise Will Get an Oscar! But Not Quite the Way You Think

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced this year's Honorary Oscar winners. Tom Cruise will receive a statuette in recognition of his "deep commitment to his craft" and his work supporting the film industry during the coronavirus pandemic. Dolly Parton will receive the Jean Hersholt Award for humanitarian work.
During the Governors Awards Gala, which will take place on November 16 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles , Honorary Oscars will be presented. According to a press release from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , the coveted trophies will go to director and actress Debbie Allen, esteemed set designer Wynn Thomas and one of the biggest stars of the Dream Factory, Tom Cruise. The Jean Hersholt Award, awarded for humanitarian work, will be received by famous philanthropist and country music legend, Dolly Parton .
"We are paying tribute to four legends whose extraordinary careers continue to influence the film industry," said Academy President Janet Yang.
Cruise, 62, will receive the statuette in recognition of his talent, outstanding achievements and service to the film industry during the coronavirus pandemic.

Parton has been praised for her consistent support for those in need. The 79-year-old "I Will Always Love You" hitmaker has made numerous donations to disaster relief efforts over the decades, and her Dollywood Foundation has donated more than 285 million books to children around the world through its Imagination Library program. The star, who has been nominated for a two-time Oscar for Best Original Song, also helped fund a coronavirus vaccine by donating $1 million.
“The beloved artist embodies the spirit of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award through her unwavering dedication to charitable causes,” Yang explained.
Allen , who viewers know from such productions as "Fame," "Grey's Anatomy" and "The Journey Through Life," will receive an Honorary Oscar for her continued influence on the world of film and television. The star has choreographed Oscar ceremonies seven times.

Thomas , in turn, was awarded for creating the sets for iconic films - "Do the Right Thing", "Malcolm X", "A Beautiful Mind" and "Hidden Figures".
"Through his vision and absolute mastery of his craft, Wynn Thomas has brought to life some of the most iconic films in film," Yang added.
