Bogotá Book Fair celebrates Spanish literature
The 37th Bogotá International Book Fair (FilBo) began this Friday with a celebration of Spanish literature as a "beacon" of the Spanish language .
This was stated by the president of the Colombian Book Chamber (CCB), Emiro Aristizábal, who noted that it is a cause for "special joy" to welcome Spain after 33 years as the country's guest of honor at the FilBo, having been the guest of honor at the 1992 edition.
" Spanish literature has been and continues to be the beacon that illuminates the path of the Castilian language , with classic authors who have transcended time and with contemporary writers who continue to reinvent narrative," said Aristizábal at the opening ceremony of FilBo, which will run until May 11.
Spain , which is coming to FilBo with a delegation of 139 authors , will promote "A Culture for Peace" during the 17 days of the fair, which is taking place at the Corferias convention and exhibition center.
Aristizábal noted that Spain is not just a guest country "but a literary brother, because Spain is a historical and cultural reference point that has shaped the evolution of the language we share."
"From the Golden Age, Cervantes and Quevedo, to the great novelists of the 20th century, such as García Lorca, Matutes, among others, Spain has given the world stories that have defined generations," added the president of the CCB, who considered it a "privilege to host contemporary writers, poets, and editors who represent the vanguard of current Spanish literature ."
Corferias President Andrés López Valderrama noted that " Spain reminds us that culture can and should be a bridge toward reconciliation and understanding."
"We are proud to welcome Spain with a vibrant and committed participation under the motto 'A Culture of Peace,' a deeply relevant concept for our country and the world at a time when dialogue, cooperation, and multilateralism must be the way forward," López said.
The president of Corferias dedicated a few words to the recently deceased 2010 Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa, whom he defined as "a universal writer, a citizen of many worlds, and an essential figure of literature in our language."
" Spain , our guest of honor, was a literary home for him," said López, who recalled that Vargas Llosa was the main speaker at FilBo in different editions, the last of which was in 2018 when Peru was the guest of honor .
