Liquids are now allowed in hand luggage at Linate and Malpensa airports: Eds-cb scanners will be in use there from 2020.

" Following the new provisions of the European Commission , liquids, aerosols, and gels in bottles of up to 2 liters per container can once again be transported in hand luggage at Milan Linate and Milan Malpensa . The EDS-CB scanners at Milan airports went into operation in 2020, paving the way for the introduction of this new technology at Italian airports ," SEA said in a statement. " We are pleased that the European Commission, after the checks carried out over the last year, has confirmed the increased safety of the new machines, which can therefore once again be used in our airports without the limits imposed on liquids to improve the passenger experience ," said Alessandro Fidato, Chief Operating Officer of SEA Milan Airports.
In addition to Milan Malpensa and Linate, in Italy these machines have been installed in Rome Fiumicino , Bergamo (since November), Bologna , Turin .
New developments are coming, therefore, for those who travel by plane, who will soon be able to carry body products, creams and drinks in their hand luggage again, forgetting the 100 millilitre restriction imposed until now.
The European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), as previously reported by the “Corriere della Sera”, has given a positive opinion to the updated algorithm of machines capable of detecting dangerous substances without having to separate or remove liquids from baggage, thus allowing the green light to the widespread use of the new 3D security scanners, capable of automatically detecting dangerous substances .
A spokeswoman for the EU Commission commented on the initial press reports by specifying: " It is up to the individual airports to inform passengers ."
The measure—already tested in the past but then suspended for further testing—will come into force at airports equipped with the approved technology.
Unlimited liquids in hand luggage: EU moves closer to approval (ANSA)
Rome Fiumicino will immediately apply the new EU rules: "Starting from 26 July 2025 , in compliance with the new provisions of the EU Commission, thanks to the new generation Eds C3 scanners in use at Fiumicino airport for hand luggage screening, it will be possible to transport LAGs (Liquids, Aerosols and Gels) in containers of up to 2L per single container, keeping them inside the hand luggage during screening operations " , as stated on the website of the company that manages Rome's airports.
Containers with a capacity exceeding this size may be carried in hand luggage only if empty; otherwise, they must be checked in as hold luggage. Electrical and electronic devices (laptops, tablets, etc.) are still permitted to be carried in hand luggage, without having to remove them from hand luggage. Security screening procedures for LAGs (Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels) remain unchanged when traditional x-ray machines are used—for example, at Fiumicino, on flights to the USA or Israel —which allow for the possibility of carrying liquid containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml in hand luggage. These containers must be placed in a resealable transparent plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1L (one per passenger), which must be presented separately from hand luggage during screening. This restriction also applies to transit passengers from non-EU countries (excluding Canada, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Norway, Singapore, the United States, and Switzerland) bound for EU destinations.
" The transport in hand luggage of LAGs (Liquids, Aerosols and Gels) for medical purposes or for a special dietary regime, including baby food, remains permitted, subject to separation and dedicated security checks, " underlines Adr.
