Saint-Martin-de-la-Mer. Cyanobacteria: swimming prohibited at Lake Chamboux

Lake Chamboux, in Saint-Martin-de-la-Mer, has been closed to swimming since Monday, August 25 due to the presence of cyanobacteria.
Located in the heart of Morvan, in the commune of Saint-Martin-de-la-Mer, Lake Chamboux is now closed to swimming. On Monday, August 25, Mayor Denis Néault was informed by the regional health agency (ARS) of the presence of toxins produced by cyanobacteria.
"The situation has deteriorated. Since the beginning of the season, weekly monitoring has been in place due to the presence of cyanobacteria, but without toxins. Today, toxins have been detected: this is a serious health risk," explains the mayor.

The proliferation of these microorganisms is a natural phenomenon, accentuated by the summer heat. "Near our home, the Saint-Agnan lake (58) has been closed to swimming for a long time because of these toxins. Cyanobacteria are also very dangerous for animals, especially dogs," adds the elected official. As soon as the ARS announced the situation, the mayor traveled around the lake to inform swimmers and have a prohibition sign installed. A municipal decree will formalize this measure. "The site has been particularly busy this year. I've also had to deal with campfires and wild camping," explains Denis Néault.
The good news, however, is that the drinking water supply is not threatened. "This happens almost every year. The ARS alerted us, but our treatment plant is not affected," reassures Pierre Poillot, president of the Chamboux water union.
