In Washington, Donald Trump attacks culture to promote his vision of America

On the morning of Wednesday, August 13, National Guard soldiers patrol the edges of the National Mall in Washington, DC , where the main political institutions of the United States are located, a sign of Donald Trump's takeover of the capital's police force. But, a few hundred meters away, another takeover is taking place, less spectacular, but just as major: that of the American historical narrative, through the takeover of the city's two main cultural institutions, the Smithsonian Institution and the Kennedy Center.
"A few months ago, I became president of the Kennedy Center and we completely reversed the situation, we ended the 'woke' political programming and we are reestablishing [this institution] as a premier place for the performing arts," Donald Trump proclaimed on Wednesday, during a ceremony in the lobby of the establishment, aimed at unveiling the names of the winners of the "Kennedy Center Honors", prestigious awards for artists in the United States. The list bears his mark, with the presence in particular of the actor and director, Sylvester Stallone, one of his close friends.
