Afro-descendants in Colombia: distribution and surprising figures according to the 2024 ECV

For the second half of 2025 , residents of the country's various territories learned the results of surveys conducted by DANE . This included the Afro-descendant population in Colombia, which yielded surprising figures within the framework of the Quality of Life Survey (ECV). What was the report?
The entity, through a document available on its official website, indicated that at least 3,737,000 people identify themselves as Black, Afro-descendant, Palenqueras, and Raizales, a figure that corresponds to 7.1% of the country's current population. Along the same lines, DANE clarified that there may be a tendency toward a small margin of error or variations between 6.5% and 7.5% of the previously issued figure. Therefore, a total of 2,363 are individuals who reside in municipal capitals and 1,374,000 who live in dispersed rural areas or even in populated centers. Using this same indicator, it was found that a total of 51.6% are women (1,928,000) and 48.4% (1,809,000) are men. A little further down is Bolívar with 12.8%, Antioquia with 12.7%, Nariño with 11.7%, and Chocó, which closes the list with 11.2%.
