OpenAI competes with Google: ChatGPT Atlas browser introduced

ChatGPT Atlas, announced by OpenAI , completely eliminates the address bar from traditional browsers and builds the experience directly around ChatGPT. CEO Sam Altman says Atlas's core goal is to "make browsing and searching AI-centric."
With its growing user base and rising operating costs, OpenAI is taking new steps to transform its AI system into a revenue model. Atlas is one of the most visible components of this strategy. By integrating with ChatGPT, the browser aims to transform web searches from traditional link lists into natural language-driven interactions.
The company is also adding a paid feature to the browser called "Agent Mode." This mode, available exclusively to ChatGPT subscribers, will act as a browsing assistant that can perform searches on behalf of the user, gathering data from pages and processing the results. OpenAI emphasizes that this makes ChatGPT more than just a chat tool, but "a digital agent that works for you."
OpenAI has recently been collaborating with users to attract them to its ecosystem, making it possible to perform a variety of tasks directly through ChatGPT, from shopping to vacation planning.
Atlas could rival Chroma
Atlas isn't actually a threat to Chrome at this stage. However, that doesn't mean it won't become a major competitor in the future. Analyst Pat Moorhead believes that tech enthusiasts will try the browser immediately, but mainstream users won't easily abandon their Chrome, Safari, or Edge habits. Furthermore, Microsoft Edge already offers similar AI capabilities, while Google has been powering its search results with AI responses for a year. On the other hand, even if it were a competitor, we can say that Google, with its emerging AI platform Gemini, has the power to counter this attack.
With the dawn of the AI era, significant changes will begin to occur in our browsing habits. Research shows that approximately 6% of desktop searches now focus on LLMs. This is double that of last year. In other words, user habits are undergoing a noticeable transformation. It's safe to say that OpenAI aims to accelerate this transformation with Atlas. Of course, only time will tell how intense the competition with Chrome will become.
