Mysterious balls of unknown origin have been found on the beaches of New South Wales again, The Guardian reports. The state's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) quickly cleared the coast. It is not yet clear whether these formations are related to similar ones found off the coast of Sydney in January, when samples were found to contain hydrocarbons, fatty acids, E. coli and traces of pumice - porous volcanic glass.
A professor of chemistry at the University of New South Wales noted that the balls have an extremely unpleasant smell. It is assumed that their appearance is associated with failures in the sewage system, which has long been in need of repair and is under increased pressure due to population growth.
The possibility that the balls entered the water via storm drains or from vessels passing by the state is also being considered. The Central Coast Council has advised people to temporarily avoid visiting beaches where the balls were found. Samples have already been sent for testing.
Previously, mysterious sea foam was recorded in South Australia, which led to mass deaths of marine life. Experts linked the phenomenon to microalgae blooms caused by stagnant waters and high temperatures.
Researcher Dmitry Savva also stated that the overwhelming majority of anomalous phenomena have explanations.
