An ancient burial of a young woman from high society, about 5,000 years old, has been found in Peru. This was reported by the country's Ministry of Culture.
The mummy was found in excellent condition during excavations in Aspero, one of the centers of the Caral-Supe civilization, the most ancient in America (c. 3000–1800 BC). The woman was approximately 20–35 years old. Her skin, hair, and nails have been preserved for thousands of years. The body was wrapped in several layers of cotton and reed fabric, covered with a blanket with macaw feathers, and had a headdress on her head.
The tomb contained many valuable objects: four reed baskets, a decorated needle, an Amazonian snail shell, a toucan beak with beads, wool textiles, a fishing net, about 30 sweet potatoes, knitting tools, and other baskets. According to scientists, these offerings indicate the high status of women and the important role of women in ancient Andean society.
Now experts plan to study the woman's health, nutrition and circumstances of death, as well as the origin of the finds.
The settlement, covering an area of about 19 hectares, is located 700 meters from the Pacific Ocean. Previously, 22 architectural complexes were identified here, indicating a developed society with active peaceful trade between regions.
