The government has allowed a reduction in the costs of creating an ion beam therapy center in Protvino

According to the Unified Information System in the sphere of procurement, the initial cost of two tenders (two stages of construction) was 2.6 billion rubles. The customer signed contracts in September and November 2023 with JSC Monolithic Construction Administration - 1. The volume of investments in the first stage of construction, ending in June 2025, was 785.9 million rubles. Now the amount is 644.2 million rubles, and the deadline for completing the work has been extended until the end of November 2025.
The second stage, which is expected to be completed in June 2026, was estimated at 1.9 billion rubles. The current funding volume is 1.6 billion rubles.
This decision was made due to the exclusion from both contracts for the production of magneto-optical and electrophysical elements for the beam installations of the experimental and clinical center for ion beam therapy based on the U-70 accelerator complex and equipment for the raster system for forming a carbon beam, as well as due to a change in the volume of work.
It became known in April 2021 that the Kurchatov Institute would receive funding to create an ion therapy center. At that time, it was reported that the government had allocated almost 4.7 billion rubles for these purposes. Of these funds, 3.5 billion rubles were planned to be spent on the manufacture, assembly, and installation of equipment during 2021–2024, 143 million rubles on design work, and the rest of the funds on the reconstruction of the building to accommodate the equipment.
The center was scheduled to begin operating in 2025. In 2023, the government moved the deadline to 2028.
