The Russian State Duma may consider a draft law in July that would prohibit the sale of animals to circuses and their use in circus performances. This was reported by RIA Novosti , citing a document from the State Duma's ecology committee.
The document states that the use of animals in circus performances currently raises both ethical and practical issues. This is because animals are often kept in conditions unsuitable for them, and during tours they are transported in stuffy carriages with limited food and without proper ventilation.
The document also adds that animal training methods are often based on harsh coercion.
If the State Duma approves the bill, it will come into force on January 1, 2026. However, its concept provides for the possibility of using animals already kept in circuses until the end of their natural life. But replacing retired animals will be prohibited.
