Trump extends deadline for TikTok sale in the US until September

Donald Trump had already postponed the deadline for ByteDance to sell its TikTok business in the US twice as the only solution to remain active in the country. Yesterday, the Republican president signed another order to extend the decision for another 90 days, this time until September 17. Trump admits that he wants to keep the app operating in the US, so the solution for the Chinese group will have to involve ceding control.
In the past, Trump has expressed optimism about Chinese President Xi Jinping's support, but there is little news about his stance now, especially as the two countries battle over trade tariffs.
ByteDance said it continues to work with Vice President JD Vance's office to find a solution. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said it was "more time, more time to get a good deal," Reuters reported. The official said lawyers for the White House and the Justice Department believe the delay has a strong legal basis.
In 2024, a law was passed that forced TikTok to suspend operations unless parent company ByteDance ceded control of the U.S. business or demonstrated significant progress toward a sale. Since then, the deadline for the sale or diversification has been repeatedly pushed back.
