Planet discovered around young sun-like star

An international team of astronomers has discovered a planet in the early stages of formation around a young, sun-like star, EFE reported Tuesday.
Scientists estimate that the exoplanet is about five million years old and that it is a gas giant the same size as Jupiter.
The discovery, published this Tuesday in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters, was made by researchers from the universities of Leiden (Netherlands), Galway (Ireland) and Arizona (United States).
The discovery was made possible by the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) VLT telescope, one of the world's most advanced, located in Chile's Atacama Desert. The new planet has been named WISPIT 2b.
Christian Ginski, one of the study's authors and a researcher at the University of Galway, explained that when observing this young star with the VLT , they detected "a completely unexpected and exceptionally beautiful multi-ring dust disk."
“When we first saw this multi-ringed disk, we knew we had to try to detect a planet within it,” he added.
This is the second time a planet at this evolutionary stage has been discovered orbiting a young Sun. The first was in 2018, by a research team that also included Ginski.
WISPIT 2b is also the first unequivocal detection of a planet in a multi-ring disk, making it the ideal laboratory for studying planet-disk interactions and subsequent evolution.
