The Trump administration has significantly increased the Pentagon's budget allocations to strengthen the nation's security and combat response.
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT and artificial intelligence (AI) models such as GPT-4o and OpenAI o1, will develop "cutting-edge" AI prototypes to address critical national security challenges "in both the warfighting and enterprise domains," the Pentagon announced.
The Defense Department specified that the contract is with OpenAI Public Sector LLC and that the work will focus primarily on the US capital, Washington, according to information cited by CNBC.
The announcement comes after OpenAI last year announced a strategic partnership with Anduril Industries to develop and deploy advanced artificial intelligence solutions for national security missions.
Open AI co-founder Sam Altman has been a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump since his campaign. Last January, he joined the Republican leader in announcing a $500 billion investment in AI-related infrastructure.
Last March, the Pentagon signed a contract with ScaleIA to develop “Thunderforge,” an initiative “to integrate AI into operational military planning” that would speed decision-making and respond to multiple threats in conflict.
