Government discusses teacher engagement with unions

The Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI) will meet this Monday with the trade unions that represent teachers to discuss the extraordinary contracting of teachers .

The meeting, which will bring together the 12 trade union organizations , is scheduled for 2:30 pm at the MECI Caparide Center, in Cascais.

The only item on the agenda is a government proposal to amend the decree-laws approved in 2024 that established exceptional measures under the + Classes + Success plan and the extraordinary recruitment process to address the teacher shortage.

At the beginning of July, MECI had already anticipated that the “+ Classes + Success 2.0” plan would soon be presented, with additional measures.

For now, the only known measures in the plan are a 35% reduction in statutory mobility, allowing hundreds of teachers to return to schools, and the anticipated expansion of travel support.

Announced on Thursday by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro during the State of the Nation debate, the measure anticipates the entry into force of a compensation scheme extended to all displaced teachers, regardless of whether or not they are placed in a school considered to be in need due to a shortage of teachers, contrary to what was envisaged in the scheme created by the Government at the beginning of that school year.

The creation of the regime in question, on the initiative of the Left Bloc, had been approved in the Assembly of the Republic in March with votes against from the PSD and CDS-PP.

However, the extension of support, the value of which varies between 150 and 450 euros per month, depending on the distance, would only come into effect with the State Budget for 2026, that is, from January.
