Lucas Paquetá could sign with a new team in Europe

Lucas Paquetá, currently under contract with West Ham until June 2027, has once again become the subject of speculation in the English market. After a two-year investigation into possible sports betting irregularities, the Brazilian midfielder was cleared by the English courts, rekindling interest from clubs like Manchester City and Newcastle.

Previously, Manchester City formalized an £80 million bid for the player during the 2023 summer transfer window. However, negotiations were halted as the investigation progressed. Now, with the case closed, Pep Guardiola's club is considering resuming negotiations and even considering including midfielder Jack Grealish in the deal as a way to financially compensate West Ham.

Newcastle, in turn, is also monitoring the player. Manager Eddie Howe had previously expressed regret for not attempting to sign him earlier, and the club's directors see Paquetá as a possible solution to recent frustrations in the transfer market. The club is preparing a proposal and expects to present it by the end of the transfer window on September 1st.

Meanwhile, West Ham is facing a difficult financial situation, mainly due to the limitations imposed by the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The need to balance the budget led to the sale of Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham for around £54.5 million. Therefore, a new deal involving Paquetá could be viewed favorably by the board, which values the Brazilian at between £60 and £70 million.

The squad's situation is also a relevant factor. The London team demonstrated weaknesses in midfield during preseason, including below-par performances from Paquetá himself. On the other hand, off-field factors seem to weigh heavily on the equation, such as the player's family's recent display of affection for the club.

Over the weekend, Paquetá's wife, Duda Fournier, posted images on social media of herself and her children wearing West Ham uniforms, accompanying the player to the stadium.

Despite this, the situation remains uncertain. According to local reports, "the transfer will depend on an offer that meets the club's requirements." Therefore, the number 10's fate remains one of the main unknowns of this transfer window, with the final decision resting in the player's hands.
