Venezuela hit by 6.2 magnitude earthquake

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck northwestern Venezuela this Wednesday. The United States Geological Survey detected the earthquake, which reported that the epicenter was on land, 24 kilometers northeast of the community of Mene Grande, in the state of Zulia.

According to this US agency, the earthquake was 8 kilometers deep, reports the Associated Press . Venezuela has not yet issued an official statement or released technical information, but it is known that the tremor was also felt in neighboring Colombia, whose border is about 300 kilometers from the epicenter.

According to the AP, many residential and commercial buildings were evacuated in areas near the border, but no material damage has yet been reported in either country. The same agency reports that Venezuelan state television did not interrupt its programming either during or after the earthquake.
