São Julião archaeological site with application for property of public interest

São Julião archaeological site with application for property of public interest
The “12th archaeological excavation campaign at Monte de São Julião” began on Monday

The Albergaria-a-Velha Council approved the application of Monte de São Julião to become a Property of Public Interest and is developing a project for the “Integral Regeneration and Enhancement of the Archaeological Site”, a municipal source revealed today.

The application for the classification of the São Julião Archaeological Site as a Property of Public Interest was approved at the last meeting of the municipal executive and, after being voted on by the Municipal Assembly, must be submitted to the Ministry of Culture, supervised by Margarida Balseiro Lopes.

The “12th archaeological excavation campaign at Monte de São Julião” began on Monday, coordinated by the Arouca Archaeology Center, which has a team of professionals deployed to that location in the parish of Branca, focusing its activities on the mound discovered there.

Excavations at Monte de São Julião were resumed in 2014, which made it possible to identify “significant traces of occupation dating back around three thousand years, dating back to the end of the Bronze Age” and to uncover the remains of the structure that delimited the ancient settlement, as well as a megalithic funerary monument, the mound that is the focus of the attention of the archaeologists present.

The archaeological work of successive campaigns has already made it possible to collect “around 52 thousand fragments of ceramics, among other materials that document the continuous occupation of the site since Prehistory”.

The classification, whose application has now been approved by the local authority, aims to protect the site, with the aim of turning it into a museum and restoring the archaeological structures. Albergaria-a-Velha Council is committed to promoting the requalification of the forest and acquiring land in the area, for which the project “Integral Regeneration and Enhancement of the Monte de São Julião Archaeological Site” is being developed, with the support of Turismo de Portugal.
