Olhão: Round table debates the future of tuna fishing

Tuna fishing in the Algarve will be highlighted on Saturday, June 28, at 6:30 pm, at the Mercado do Peixe, in Olhão, with a round table entitled «Past, present and future of tuna fishing in the Algarve».
The event brings together former fishermen, researchers, experts and members of the local community, in a dialogue about the memories, current challenges and future of an activity deeply linked to the Algarve identity.
The session is part of the exhibition “Heritage in Network: one fish, one community, two countries”, by photojournalist Eduardo Martins, who has been documenting the rehabilitation of tuna fishing on the southern coast of Portugal.
The moderation will be in charge of the author of the project himself, who will lead the conversation with Alfredo Poço and Samuel Santos, captains of the Tunipex armament; Augusto Rodrigues, former worker at Armação da Abóbora; José Marcelino Castanheira, researcher and director of APOS – Association for the Enhancement of the Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Olhão; and chef Celso António, from Snack-bar Lazarus.
The organization highlights the importance of valuing the intangible heritage associated with this centuries-old practice — from the knowledge of the rigging to the experiences of those who worked at sea. According to the note sent to the press, preserving these stories “is ensuring that they are transmitted and inspire new forms of sharing and knowledge”.
The event ends with the live preparation of a tuna ceviche by Celso António, in a tasting moment that combines tradition and innovation.
Entry is free.
