Maria do Rosário Pedreira honored at Escritaria 2025

Maria do Rosário Pedreira will be honored at this year's Escritaria festival, which takes place in Penafiel from October 20th to 26th, for her literary career, which began with poetry and continued through novels, children's books and musical lyrics.
Escritaria, now in its 18th edition, “is back to celebrate Portuguese poetry, this time with an author who ranges from poetry to children's literature, and even song lyrics,” highlights, in a statement, the Penafiel City Council, promoter of this literary festival.
“Maria do Rosário Pedreira is a distinguished Portuguese poet, novelist, columnist, translator and editor, recognized both for the literary quality of her poetic work and for her decisive contribution to the publishing and promotion of literature in Portugal,” the municipality highlighted.
Born in Lisbon in 1959, Maria do Rosário Pedreira demonstrated a deep connection to the world of books from an early age, having developed a multifaceted career that places her among the most influential figures in contemporary Portuguese literary culture.
As a poet, she is the author of “delicate, intimate and reflective work”, marked by themes such as love, loss, time and absence , her poetry often associated with a lyrical heritage that dialogues with names such as Sophia de Mello Breyner or Eugénio de Andrade, “but with its own tone of restraint and sensitivity”.
In the editorial field, Maria do Rosário Pedreira was responsible for editing authors such as José Luís Peixoto, Valter Hugo Mãe, João Tordo, Luísa Sobral, Nuno Camarneiro, Paulo Moreiras and Ana Cristina Silva.
Her sensitivity as a reader and editor has been praised by writers, critics, and industry professionals, earning her a place as one of the leading mediators between authors and readers in Portugal. Maria do Rosário Pedreira also wrote lyrics for fados performed by musicians such as Carlos do Carmo, Ana Moura, Aldina Duarte, and António Zambujo.
His works include titles such as “My Human Body”, “The House and the Smell of Books”, “The Song of the Wind in the Cypresses”, “No Name After” or “That Vain Fado”.
Escritaria, in its 18th year, returns to the city of Penafiel, “in an unparalleled celebration in Portugal”, highlights the municipality, recalling that recently the internationalization project of this festival was distinguished with the “Norte+Criativo” award, and the Audience Award , in the first edition of the Mais a Norte Awards, promoted by the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-Norte), which recognize the most innovative and impactful initiatives in the region.
