INTERIOR OF THE WEEK: Modernist villa in Łódź regained its shine. Inside, wood, light and a beautiful bathroom

An extraordinary modernist gem from the late 1930s has undergone a spectacular metamorphosis that captivates with the harmony of the past and the future. This 400-meter villa in the heart of Łódź has regained life thanks to the masterful solutions of architects from the M&A studio - carefully written in wood, glass and memories of a previous era.
In the heart of the villa district of Łódź, near Mickiewicz Park, stands a house that, although built in 1938, is currently experiencing a second youth. From the inconspicuous 185 m² of the original development, the body has grown to an impressive 400 m² - all thanks to a subtle but significant extension, which was based on respect for the original.

The architects from M&A took up the challenge: to restore the former glory and at the same time make the villa functional for the 21st century. The result? A modernist façade with glazing and movable wooden shutters introduces space and light.

The cozy garden adjacent to the building subtly shifts the boundaries of the interior to the outside – it is a space created for both children and adults , for playing, working and relaxing.

On the ground floor , an open-plan living area combines a living room, dining room and kitchen. The focal point of the meeting is a table made of American wood from Wood We Trust. The herringbone wooden floor , the mosaic in the shape of "corsets" and the exposed beams of the ceiling remind us of the history, while the yellow staircase and colourful carpets bring fresh energy.

Upstairs, there is a bedroom with a dressing room and bathroom, a home office and children's rooms. The green winter garden serves as a loggia and a staircase connecting the floors - it's like taking a walk in the garden without leaving the house.

M&A Design Studio has been operating since 2005, founded by Michał Płonka - a passionate about adapting monuments and interiors . His portfolio includes houses, housing estates, hotels, and recently also the modernization of a villa in Łódź. The project won recognition in the Modernization of the Year 2024 competition - the functionality, attention to modernist details and spectacular glazing that "let" the garden inside were praised.

- Respect for history – original ceiling beams, herringbone pattern, mosaic of “corsets”, etc. are exposed.
- Modern comfort for the 21st century – technology does not drown out the spirit of the place, but enriches it with functionality
- A living space for the family – a home where you can live, work, raise children and entertain guests
