The famous guitar dates back to 1982, when Eddie Van Halen collaborated with American guitar manufacturer Kramer . The musician was known for improving and customizing his own instruments, embellishing their bodies with his own designs. This need to personalize his instruments was linked to his philosophy that "a guitar is an extension of the person who plays it."

For example, a guitar that will be auctioned at Sotheby's in October, which the musician personally modified at the Kramer factory in New Jersey, is adorned with a red and black Dutch De Stijl pattern. Its sound was first heard in the early 1980s, during the tour promoting his band's fifth album, "Diver Down."
