Minister of Development and Technology Krzysztof Paszyk has appointed Marta Ewa Wachowicz as president of the Polish Space Agency (POLSA), the Ministry of Development and Technology announced on Tuesday. She replaced Col. Marcin Mazur , who served as acting president after the dismissal of President Grzegorz Wrochna in March.
As reported by the Ministry of Development, Dr. Marta Ewa Wachowicz has an education in the field of space research. She obtained a doctorate in physical sciences in the field of space physics at the Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
She participated in the creation of the Polish Space Agency and the construction of its operating model. In 2015-2018, she headed the Department of Strategy and International Cooperation of the Polish Space Agency. She created and supervised the implementation of substantive support mechanisms for entrepreneurs in the space sector in the field of international economic cooperation. She was also responsible for coordinating activities supporting the activity of Polish entities on the European space market and establishing international cooperation with leading national space agencies.
As indicated in the MRiT press release, Dr. Wachowicz "has extensive knowledge of European space policy and the scientific and technological programs of national space agencies, including the European Space Agency. She is also familiar with the issues of using space technologies in state defense, and the experience gained while working at CBK PAN resulted in knowledge of issues related to the design issues of building instruments and components for the space industry and the high-tech sector.
The Ministry indicated that the new president of POLSA also has experience in financial strategic planning and creating multidisciplinary research teams, which she gained as the coordinator of the Earth and Planet Center - Geoplanet. While working at NASK-PIB, she expanded her knowledge to include aspects related to cybersecurity and the importance of information systems' resistance to actions violating the confidentiality, integrity, availability and authenticity of processed data.
The new President of POLSA also has education related to science management, the R&D system in Poland and the commercialization of scientific research. She completed Executive MBA postgraduate studies at Stanford University in California.
In the years 2015-2022 she was a lecturer at the Warsaw School of Economics and the Kozminski University in Warsaw.
The Polish Space Agency (POLSA) is an executive agency of the Ministry of Development and Technology, established in 2014. Its task is to support the Polish space industry. POLSA cooperates with international agencies and state administration in the field of research and use of outer space.
The previous president of the Agency , Prof. Grzegorz Wrochna, was dismissed in March by the Minister of Development and Technology, Krzysztof Paszyk. The reason - as the ministry informed PAP - was irregularities in the performance of tasks related to the management of the agency.
On February 20, 2025, the Minister of Development summoned Wrochna to provide explanations regarding irregularities in reporting the uncontrolled entry of the Falcon 9 rocket stage into the atmosphere. It was argued at the time that the POLSA reports did not signal the level of risk. (PAP)
