This substance is commonly used in many nail styling products (e.g., gels). The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) confirms that a ban on the use of TPO in cosmetics will take effect on September 1st.
The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate explains that TPO is diphenyl-(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide (Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide) permitted for use in limited concentrations in cosmetic products intended for nail modeling and styling, for professional use only.
Detailed requirements for the use of TPO in cosmetics are strictly defined in item 311 of Annex III to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products.
TPO is found in nail styling products such as hybrid polishes and gels. It acts as a photoinitiator that activates the curing process in a UV/LED lamp.
According to the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) , the use of TPO in cosmetic products will be prohibited from September 1, 2025. "In light of the substance's classification in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 CLP2, TPO, as a substance toxic to reproduction category 1B (Repr. cat. 1B), should not be used in cosmetics," it was reported.
In practice, this means the cosmetics industry has time to adjust its cosmetics formulas before the deadline. From September 1st, cosmetics containing TPO will no longer be allowed to be marketed or made available.
