Robotic precision in Gdynia. Doctors removed a tumor from a hard-to-reach place

A pioneering operation to remove a parapharyngeal space tumor was performed in the Polish Red Cross Maritime Hospital in Gdynia in a 48-year-old patient. The procedure was performed using a modern robotic surgery system and was a complete success. The patient was discharged home the next day.

Robot-assisted surgery

At the end of April, a complicated operation was performed on a 48-year-old man at the Polish Red Cross Maritime Hospital in Gdynia. Doctors from the Head and Neck Surgery and Robotic Surgery Department removed a tumor located in the parapharyngeal space on the left side. The procedure was performed using modern robotic surgery technology.

– The procedure is an example of the effective use of robotic surgery technology in the treatment of complex cases in hard-to-reach anatomical locations, while ensuring the patient's quick recovery and minimizing the risk of complications – said Sławomir Piotrowski, MD, PhD, head of the department.

The tumor caused pressure on adjacent structures.

The patient had a large cyst in the parapharyngeal space – it was as much as 54x42x38 mm. MRI revealed a cystic lesion containing fluid, with a ragged inner wall. The cyst was pressing on nearby structures, and biopsy suggested a so-called lateral neck cyst.

The surgery was performed through the mouth – the doctors made an incision in the palatine arch area, which allowed them to reach the tumor without having to open the neck. The lesion was carefully separated from the tissues and removed in its entirety.

– The patient was discharged home the day after the procedure in good general and local condition, without any significant complaints. He ate solid foods on his own – reported Dr. Dariusz Nałęcz, MD, who performed the surgery with the medical and nursing team.

Histopathological examination showed that the removed lesion was a basal cell adenoma. The tumor did not invade the wall and was completely removed within the boundaries of healthy tissue. A week after the procedure, the patient underwent a check-up in the hospital - everything was healing properly.
