The Jagiellonian University Medical College will receive PLN 64 million from the National Reconstruction Plan to expand its campus in Krakow's Prokocim. The funds will be used to build a modern teaching facility with laboratories, simulation rooms and study spaces. As Prof. Maciej Małecki emphasizes, the stakes are not only the development of the university, but also the future of the healthcare system.

On June 11, 2025, the Ministry of Health announced a list of universities that will receive support from the KPO for the development of medical infrastructure. Among the beneficiaries was the Jagiellonian University Medical College, which will receive PLN 64 million for the construction of a new teaching facility in Prokocim.

The new building at the Jagiellonian University Medical Campus will serve medical students and scientists. It will include laboratories, rooms for practical vocational training, simulators, spaces using augmented reality, and lecture and seminar classes .

The campus expansion project is not only about improving the comfort of learning – it is also a specific response to the needs of the healthcare system. Thanks to the new infrastructure, the university will be able to increase the number of students it accepts , as well as improve the quality and effectiveness of education.

Modern teaching infrastructure, the use of innovative technologies and compliance with current sanitary standards will allow for the admission of a larger number of students, better preparation for the profession and raising the level and effectiveness of education of future doctors who will join the Polish healthcare system. The newly built facility will be a place of study and work for approximately 5.5 thousand people - including approximately 2.5 thousand students .

The university authorities do not hide the fact that the decision to grant funds was received with relief – now it is time for implementation.

– We have been waiting for this decision impatiently. Now we are facing very important and difficult tasks concerning negotiating the agreement and – what may be the most difficult – meeting the deadlines for the investment implementation in order to fit in the deadlines specified in the National Reconstruction Plan – comments Prof. Maciej Małecki, Vice-Rector of the Jagiellonian University for CM.

It also indicates that extending the deadlines resulting from the schedule of the National Reconstruction Plan may be crucial.

We hope that the Polish government will negotiate their extension with the European Commission. At stake are tens of billions of złoty in various investment areas – he adds.

The new building will also allow for the transfer of some of the Jagiellonian University Medical College units from historic buildings scattered around Krakow , which no longer meet today's teaching or research standards. As Professor Małecki points out, these are facilities that generate increasingly high maintenance costs and make it difficult to conduct modern academic activities.

– Completion of the Campus will enable the transfer of further departments and other units of the Jagiellonian University Medical College from old – often historic buildings, located in various parts of the city, which do not meet today's standards of education and scientific research - buildings that generate increasingly higher maintenance costs - to modern spaces friendly to conducting teaching and scientific activities - emphasizes Prof. Małecki.
