The creator of Star Wars is opening an art museum. It's going to be... cosmic.

George Lucas announces the creation of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a unique art museum. The building's design, as befits the creator of Star Wars, is… truly cosmic.
After selling his studio to Disney, George Lucas seems to be enjoying his new idea. Whatever the case, we can expect great things from the man who gave us Star Wars and invented Indiana Jones .
The director announced the opening of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles , which he is creating together with Mellody Hobson , president of Ariel Investment .
At San Diego Comic-Con, Lucas announced his project as a tribute to all forms of narrative expression: from comics and animation to fine art and film design . The museum's exhibits will include over 40,000 works from Lucas's personal collection . These include gems like original Peanuts comic strips , concept art from Star Wars and Indiana Jones , and paintings by artists such as Norman Rockwell , Frida Kahlo , and Kara Walker .

For Lucas and Hobson , collecting art is a shared passion. Over the decades, they have amassed a collection spanning American art , illustration , comics , film , and animation , and even contemporary works by African-American artists.
"The stories told through art are often key to understanding society and its aspirations—our own and those of others. We hope the Lucas Museum will help viewers better understand the world and strive for a more just and empathetic society," the director says of the project.

And while the initiative itself is commendable, it's also worth focusing on the building that will house the institution. Because if the creator of Star Wars wants to open a museum, it has to be... cosmic.
The George Lucas Museum will resemble a giant spaceshipIt was designed by the renowned architect Ma Yansong from MAD Architects , with the cooperation of Stantec as the main executive architect.
The building, spanning over 28,000 square meters, resembles a floating spaceship , housing galleries , two modern cinemas , as well as event spaces, restaurants , and shops . All surrounded by greenery.
The museum's location in Exposition Park in Los Angeles creates unique opportunities for collaboration and partnerships with other cultural institutions in the city.
So what? Space, right? The museum will open in 2026, and it's already clear that art and Star Wars fans alike must visit it.
