Alexander Payne to head Venice Film Festival jury

Alexander Payne to head Venice Film Festival jury

Two-time Oscar winner, director and screenwriter of films such as Sideways and Winter Solstice, Alexander Payne, will be the president of the jury at this year's Venice Film Festival.

In the official announcement by the Venice Film Festival jury chairman, its artistic director Alberto Barbera emphasized that Alexander Payne belongs to a small group of cinephile filmmakers whose passion for cinema is fueled by knowledge of films from the past and curiosity about contemporary cinema. According to Barbera, no boundaries or obstacles stand in his way, as we read on the festival's official website.

- The above-mentioned qualities, combined with his experience in screenwriting, make him the ideal candidate to lead the Venice jury, which evaluates films from all over the world. I am grateful to him for accepting my invitation, thus sealing our acquaintance, which goes back to his graduation short film - says Barbera.

Payne, for his part, will emphasize his excitement about the new role and the honor he feels about the task at hand, but he does note that as a filmmaker, he has ambivalent feelings about comparing his films to each other.

Who is Alexander Payne?

Alexander Payne is one of the most decorated contemporary directors, at least in terms of the awards of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. His eight films have been nominated for a total of 24 Oscars, including four times for Best Picture of the Year and three times for Director. Payne himself has been awarded twice for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Payne is currently prepping for his latest production, which will be shot in rural Denmark , with plot details being kept under wraps.

The 82nd edition of the Venice Film Festival will take place between August 27 and September 6.
