Even though it's chilly and wet outside, you can sow some very tasty vegetables in November. Some vegetables can be harvested quickly . Others will take a little longer, but sowing early gives them a head start. So grab your seed packets and be sure to sow these vegetables:

There are two ways to grow onions: sowing seeds or planting seed potatoes. Since onions are biennials , the second method is the fastest, because by planting them , you simply skip an entire growing season. As long as there's no frost, you can still plant your onions in November—in the open ground or in a seed tray in a cold frame. They'll quickly develop roots that way. In the spring, they'll continue to grow and yield a harvest weeks earlier, starting in June, than if you plant them in the spring.

Most garlic varieties are best planted from September to mid-November. This delicious vegetable is very winter-hardy. In fact, it needs a period of cold to develop individual cloves (rather than a single bulb). Make sure you plant the cloves in well-draining soil, otherwise they will rot. Growing garlic in pots, on ridges, or in a cold frame offers protection against this.

The classic crop to sow in the fall is broad beans. You can simply sow broad beans in the open ground , as they are winter-hardy and germinate at temperatures as low as five degrees Celsius. Sowing broad beans in pots is also an option. In either case, choose a sunny spot.

Sow the first early peas , such as the runner peas 'Kelvedon Wonder' or 'Voorlopers', in the fall to overwinter and produce their first harvest early in the spring. Protect the peas from snails , birds , and mice by growing them in covered containers.
Tip!

Make delicious salads by sowing lots of salad greens. Leafy vegetables like mizuna, mustard, spinach, and lamb's lettuce are very easy to grow, especially if you provide them with some protection from the harshest elements. You can even grow them indoors on a bright windowsill, so you can keep picking all winter long.

Sowing peppers , such as jalapeños, habaneros, or chili peppers, can be done virtually any time of year using a heated propagator. But especially in November, when the days are shorter, you need to ensure sufficient warmth and the brightest spot in your home you can find. A grow light is therefore a must if you can't provide your seedlings with enough light—otherwise, it's best to wait to sow peppers until the days get longer again.

Growing microgreens and sprouts is a great year-round option. You can easily do this on your windowsill . You'll have delicious, healthy vegetables on your plate in no time.

You can harvest anywhere. From boxes by the kitchen door and a row of pots on a balcony to a vertical edible wall: there's a perfect vegetable garden plant for every spot.
