Amidst the imposing mountains, there's a place where visitors clearly delight in the sound of water flowing into a waterfall. It also houses a religious site well known in this part of the country. What is this location?
This is none other than the Guáitara River Canyon, located in Las Lajas, Ipiales municipality. According to information published directly on the official website, it is 10 kilometers from the border with Ecuador. You should know that an imposing chapel was built in this area, which is frequently visited by parishioners. It has a Gothic style and consists of three naves built by a bridge that crosses the river, which is present in this beautiful region of Colombia.

Colombia Travel, a specialized website, discussed this sanctuary and added that its origins date back to the 18th century. Since that time, residents of this part of the country tell of an indigenous woman and her daughter who were walking toward Ipiales. Apparently, the girl couldn't speak, and it was in that cave that her mother heard her for the first time. During that brief conversation, the girl asked for a ransom, but her mother couldn't comply because she didn't see anyone asking for help, so she retreated in fear.

When she returned home, the little girl disappeared, and with great anguish, she returned to the cave where she found her playing with a small boy and another woman. This story didn't inspire the credibility of other residents, so much so that the indigenous woman returned to this area to ask the mestizo woman to resurrect the girl. Apparently, what happened prompted several voices to believe that miracles and healings had been performed in this space. To this day, the tradition remains firmly entrenched among its residents. The two plans you can try in NariñoThe aforementioned website suggested two activities you can do during your visit to this part of the country: 1. Visit La Cocha Lagoon, one of the largest bodies of water in the country, which boasts a glacier and at least 30 nature reserves. 2. Visit Juanambú Canyon, the second longest in Colombia and where Simón Bolívar fought a crucial battle against the Spanish.
