WhatsApp will let you choose whether you want photos and videos in HD quality or compressed: this is how the new option will work.

WhatsApp , the popular messaging app from Meta , continues to make strides in improving the user experience and is now working on offering greater control over how media files are managed. Millions of photos and videos are shared daily, so the latest development is that users will be able to choose the quality in which they are automatically downloaded.

WhatsApp lets you choose the quality of photos and videos when automatically downloading.

According to the specialized media WaBetaInfo , this new feature, available in beta version 2.25.18.11 for Android , allows you to choose the quality with which received photos and videos are automatically downloaded. This feature, still in the testing phase, is located in the "Storage and data" section and offers two options: standard quality and HD quality.

  • Standard : Compresses files so they take up less space and download faster
  • HD : Maintains higher resolution, but requires more data and space.

This improvement is based on a new dual upload system that WhatsApp recently implemented . That is, when someone sends an HD image or video, their device generates two versions of the file: one standard and one high-definition . Both are uploaded to the servers, and the recipient can automatically download the one they prefer based on their settings.

If the user has chosen automatic download in standard quality , they will be able to view the file in a lower resolution. However, if they later want to access the HD version , the app will retrieve it from the server, provided it's still available. The great thing about this feature, which will be available to everyone in the coming weeks, is that users can prioritize saving or quality.
