MEXICO CITY (apro).- A tourist originally from Mexico City died on the morning of June 3 on Icacos Beach in Acapulco, Guerrero, after being swept away by the strong waves caused by the swell phenomenon. The woman entered the sea despite warnings issued by local authorities and the presence of red flags in the area.

Entered the sea despite warnings

According to local reports, the woman was walking along the stretch of sand near the breakwater when a series of waves hit her. Witnesses said lifeguards warned her about the sea conditions; however, she decided to approach the shore. The waves dragged her into a whirlpool, causing her to suffocate by submersion.

Two other tourists who also entered the water managed to get out on their own. A tourist service provider attempted to rescue the woman and brought her back to the beach, where she was given first aid. However, she no longer showed vital signs.

Discrepancy in the victim's age

There are discrepancies regarding the victim's age. Some media outlets report that she was 68, while others indicate that she was 80. So far, authorities have not officially confirmed the identity or age of the deceased woman.

Authorities cordoned off the area

Members of the National Guard responded to the scene and cordoned off the area , while personnel from the Guerrero State Attorney General's Office (FGE) removed the body and opened an investigation file.

This death occurred amid a high seas alert issued by the state's Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection. The agency has indicated that this phenomenon poses a risk to swimmers and small boats due to the rising waves, which can reach heights of up to 2.7 meters, in addition to strong and unpredictable currents.

Second case in less than a month

This is the second swell-related death reported in Acapulco in less than a month. On May 16, a young tourist died in similar circumstances on El Morro Beach. On that occasion, material damage was also reported to more than 40 businesses on Bonfil Beach due to the unusual surge.

Preventive actions by local authorities

The Acapulco Municipal Government , through the General Coordination of Civil Protection and Firefighters, has reinforced its monitoring and response efforts in vulnerable areas . Preventive patrols have been conducted along the sandy stretch of Bonfil Beach to assess the damage and provide guidance to tourism service providers in response to the rising waves.

During these tours, safety recommendations were provided to local businesses and residents, urging them to take precautions in light of the forecast of high waves in the coming days.

Civil Protection has reiterated its call to the public and visitors to avoid any recreational activities at sea, as well as to stay informed through official sources during the presence of the phenomenon.
