Mexican divers win silver medal at World Aquatics Championships

MEXICO CITY (apro).- Divers Osmar Olvera, Randal Willars, Alejandra Estudillo, and Yunuen Parra won the silver medal in the mixed team event during the first day of activities corresponding to the ornamental diving event of the World Aquatics Championships being held in Singapore.
The Mexican quartet climbed onto the podium after accumulating 426.30 points, in a competition won by the Chinese representation of Zilong Cheng, Yiwen Chen, Yuan Cao and Yuxi Chen, with 466.25, while the bronze went to the Japanese Reo Nishida, Sho Sakai, Rin Kaneto and Sayaka Mikami, with 409.65.
The tricolor team, led by the double Olympic medalist in Paris 2024, Osmar Olvera, left partial times of 58.50, 91.20, 51.00, 76.50, 73.50 and 75.60 to hang the silver medal and add the second medal for Mexico so far in Singapore 2025, after the bronze obtained by Diego Villalobos in the solo technical event of artistic swimming.
The silver medal also marked the third consecutive edition in which Mexico has won second place in the mixed team event at a World Aquatics Championships, emulating its achievements at both Fukuoka 2023 and Doha 2024.
“This is a result that allows us four to overcome our initial nerves and motivate the others,” Olvera commented. “You get a little nervous, and you don't want to do badly in the end, knowing that Mexico has won medals in this event since Fukuoka, which puts a bit of pressure on you,” the multi-Olympic and world medalist acknowledged.
The mixed team competition consists of individual and synchronized dives from both the 3-meter springboard and the 10-meter platform.
In more results from the Mexican diving team at the World Aquatics Championships, 14-year-old Mia Cueva from Jalisco finished seventh in the 1-meter springboard event, with 260.05 points, in a competition that represented her debut in a world competition as part of the development process leading up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
