Following the recent power outage that left virtually all of Spain without internet access, Elon Musk used his social network X to promote Starlink, SpaceX's satellite internet service.

With a straightforward message and what appears to be a great offer, Musk has decided to announce the services Starlink can provide. This service operates with a constellation of low-orbit satellites capable of bypassing the problems of terrestrial networks.

What is Starlink?

According to the latest report from consulting firm The Insight Partners , the global satellite internet market will reach $23.82 billion by 2031 .

In this context of strong growth, Starlink stands out: in May, it already registered 2.7 million subscribers and operates in some 75 jurisdictions. This pace of acquisition and its presence in the Americas, Europe, and Asia have allowed it to distance itself from traditional competitors.

How does the satellite network work?

Unlike geostationary satellites, which orbit at nearly 36,000 kilometers in altitude, the Starlink constellation flies at approximately 550 kilometers. This design dramatically reduces latency: while conventional services average around 600 ms round-trip, Starlink maintains a speed of around 25 ms .

To connect, the user installs a satellite dish in their home that communicates with the satellites, and they will receive a kit with a router and cables . The entire process usually takes only a few minutes, as the system automatically adjusts the orientation and connection.

Global expansion and strategic alliances

Starlink's momentum has been bolstered by agreements with governments and companies. In addition to its deployment in remote areas where coverage is weak or nonexistent, SpaceX has signed deals to provide internet access to schools, ships, and research platforms .

On the other hand, the recent collaboration with T-Mobile will allow, in emergency cases, 50 mobile phone models (including the latest iPhone 16 and Samsung Galaxy S25) to automatically connect to the satellite network to send messages and share locations at no additional cost.

Amazon Kuiper, on the prowl

As Starlink consolidates its position, Amazon launched the first batch of 27 Kuiper satellites from Cape Canaveral on April 28. The KA-01 mission, aboard a ULA Atlas V rocket, marks the beginning of a series of 46 flights that will collectively place more than 2,300 devices into low orbit.

Bezos hopes to use Kuiper to rival Starlink in speed and latency, although it will still take several months to fully deploy the network.
