Cyclist killed by drunk driver in Sinaloa

MEXICO CITY (apro).- A cyclist died on Sunday, June 8, after being hit by a car on the Los Mochis-Topolobampo highway, near the Cocoroco Poultry Farm in Sinaloa.
At around 7:00 a.m., a dark gray Honda Civic lost control and crashed into the center median. While attempting to maneuver, the car struck the cyclist, identified by authorities as Alberto "I," who died at the scene.
Emergency personnel from the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) and investigative police arrived at the scene to conduct the necessary investigations and provide forensic services.
Municipal authorities cordoned off the area and opened the opposite lane to allow traffic to continue.
Local media reported that the driver was allegedly racing another vehicle, which reportedly left the scene after the accident. Both vehicles were speeding, and the drivers were reportedly intoxicated, although this information has not been officially confirmed.
According to the unofficial report, the perpetrator fled, leaving two women traveling with him inside the car, who were injured. Both were treated by paramedics and taken to Los Mochis General Hospital.
One of them, identified as Valeria "N," died hours later while receiving medical attention. The investigating police were notified and took charge of gathering the necessary information, local media reported.
The cycling community demands justice for Mr. Alberto “I.”In the city of Los Monchis, the cycling community has grown considerably. In recent years, several cycling clubs have established themselves, with more than 200 participants, including children, youth, and adults.
Yadira Álvarez, a member of the Las Catrinas Women's Cycling Club, remembered Mr. Alberto "I" as a pleasant and helpful man, passionate about this sport:
"He was a lifelong cyclist who went out riding every day, and unfortunately, he wasn't lucky enough to return home. He was a nice person, quite helpful, a lifelong rider. He had his '50 and Over' club, where they rode every day. They're old-school cyclists," Álvarez said, as quoted by the local news program "Altavoz."
He also indicated that, following Sunday's tragedy, the cycling community will seek to honor Alberto's memory and demand justice for his death through a demonstration they are organizing:
“Yes, we are considering justice, uniting, raising our voices, marching, making ourselves heard. We are working on that, organizing.”
The action will be carried out to raise awareness and demand that authorities create safer conditions for practicing this sport, while also raising public awareness about the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol.
