Mental health and friendship in the Great Depression

Mental health and friendship in the Great Depression

The stage of the Ravelo Hall of the National Theater will be filled with humor, emotions and deep reflections with the premiere of The Great Depression , an intelligent comedy of black humor that addresses mental health , the passage of time, addictions, friendship and love from the lives of two women marked by their contradictions and failures.

Under the direction of renowned actress and director Indiana Brito , the play will be presented from today until Sunday the 13th of this month , with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:30 p.m., and Sundays at 6:30 p.m.

A story of resilience

Indiana Brito explained that The Great Depression shows us how two women face their broken lives from different places, but with a common foundation: the desire to rebuild themselves .

"Through humor and the conflict between their personalities, the play shows us that even in the midst of emotional or existential crises , there is room for connection, forgiveness, and transformation," the director emphasized.

The piece, originally by Spanish author Félix Sabroso , will star experienced actresses Elvira Taveras and Lumy Lizardo , who will play Manuela and Marta , two old friends who reunite after years apart following a suicide attempt.

Elvira Taveras , winner of the 2025 Sovereign Award, described this comedy as an entertaining yet meaningful piece. "The audience will be able to laugh and, at the same time, reflect on the small and large red flags that mental health issues reveal. It's a play that invites us to laugh at our own contradictions and empathize with others," she said.

For Taveras, the play required a profound emotional exploration . "Together with Lumy, we created a stage dynamic that reflects the intensity and ups and downs of a friendship marked by life."

Lumy Lizardo , for her part, confessed that playing Marta has taught her important lessons . "This character taught me that, beyond deceit and falsehood, there can also be loyalty , fidelity, and a friend's shoulder to lean on. Working with Elvira is a wonderful experience," she noted.
