The increase in HIV cases in this state is worrying.

The Network of People Affected by HIV (Repavih) warned that in Yucatán there is an increase in the number of positive HIV cases, especially in the state's younger population.

On the subject, Pablo Alemán Góngora, president of the aforementioned association, warned that in less than six months, 28 infected people have been registered in the state, the same number of positive HIV cases reported in all of 2024.

He stated that they initially observed a decrease in cases and attributed it to the opening of specialized HIV testing clinics, "however, the numbers have rebounded, and more than 50 new infections are projected for 2025, compared to the 28 detected last year."

He pointed out that most of the cases detected are in people under 30 years of age, including women. , "which reflects an epidemiological change compared to previous years."

Alemán Góngora emphasized that, previously, HIV was primarily concentrated in homosexual men, but now it is widespread, so cases in the heterosexual population are increasingly frequent.

"Prevention is the task of the health and education system because it is necessary to promote a greater culture of sexual and reproductive health in the classrooms, especially at the higher education level, because we have discovered that university students do not know, for example, what the female condom is and what pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV is," he commented.
