Pope Francis remains in critical condition; he now has mild kidney failure

Pope Francis remains in critical condition at Rome's Gemelli hospital on Sunday, although he has not had any new respiratory crises. "Some blood tests show an initial mild renal insufficiency, currently under control," according to the medical report released by the Vatican.
The pontiff, who has been hospitalized since February 14 with bilateral pneumonia, was given two units of concentrated red blood cells, which increased his hemoglobin level, the medical report released on Sunday added.
The thrombocytopenia, i.e. the low level of platelets detected on Saturday, "remained stable," the sources explained.

High-flow oxygen therapy continues through nasal cannulas after the Pope suffered a respiratory crisis on Saturday.
The Pope remains alert and well-oriented, the medical report added.
"The complexity of the clinical picture and the wait required for pharmacological therapies to provide some response mean that the prognosis remains reserved," Vatican sources added.
