Did you know? This is the correct order to wash dishes.

Did you know? This is the correct order to wash dishes.

Preparing food inevitably involves washing dishes, a chore that may not excite many people. However, the order in which you wash your utensils can make this task more efficient.

In addition to saving time, following the recommended dishwashing order helps maintain utensil hygiene and kitchen safety.

How to wash dishes after use?

"Maintaining cleanliness" is one of the World Health Organization's (WHO) main recommendations for ensuring food safety. Therefore, properly washing kitchen utensils is essential for maintaining health.

The WHO urges special care with utensils that come into direct contact with food, especially those used for eating, drinking, and cooking. Therefore, cleaning and disinfection activities should be essential in all kitchens.

Although dishwashing methods may vary from household to household, the real challenge is minimizing cross-contamination (the unwanted transfer of microorganisms).

Before you begin washing, the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) recommends reading the instructions on cleaning products and understanding the characteristics of the utensils to know how to use them. For example, some baking sheets should not be submerged in water.

It's also important to scrape off any food residue before washing dishes. Remember that cooking oil cannot be disposed of down the drain, as it increases water pollution.

Another helpful ACI tip is to put dish soap or baking soda in hot water in the sink and soak the utensils for 15 to 30 minutes before draining.

And you can also use the double-rinse method, backed by a study from the University of Michigan. It involves using two sinks (spaces separate from the sink) to hold hot water in one for washing and cold water in the other for rinsing.

Although there is no universal standard for washing order, both the WHO and the ICA agree on the importance of washing the least soiled and delicate items first:

Glasses and cups: Since they are the least dirty and most fragile, it is recommended to wash them first to prevent them from becoming impregnated with grease or residue from other utensils.

Cutlery (forks, spoons or knives): They are more resistant and easier to clean.

Plates and bowls: These should be washed under running water while scrubbing, making it easier to remove food residue.

Cooking utensils (ladles, spatulas, or cutting boards): These may contain more grease or residue. For utensils that have come into contact with raw food, the WHO recommends an additional (separate) sanitization process.

Pots and pans: Because they are soaked in grease, they should be washed last to avoid contaminating the water.

Finally, you can dry your hair outdoors or with a towel. If you choose the latter option, use a dry, cotton cloth to absorb excess water.

And after the dishes, wash the sink area, which will help prevent the buildup of germs and maintain overall kitchen hygiene.

Follow these additional recommendations to wash dishes optimally and ensure safety:

  • During the process, drain the water and change it if it becomes greasy, too cold, or if the foam disappears.
  • Disinfect utensils with boiling water or a disinfectant solution, especially those that have been in contact with raw foods.
  • Use the right amount of soap, following the instructions on the cleaning product or the manufacturer.
  • Avoid piling up dirty dishes, as this can make cleaning difficult and encourage the growth of bacteria.
  • Assign exclusive rags and sponges for washing dishes and utensils that come into direct contact with food.
  • Maintaining hygiene in the kitchen is not only a matter of order, but also of health.
