Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reflecting on their fairy-tale Disneyland adventure with children Archie and Lilibet.
On September 21, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex appeared on ABC’s The Happiest Story on Earth: 70 Years of Disneyland – Special Edition of 20/20. They opened up about their family’s June trip to the California theme park in celebration of Lilibet’s fourth birthday.
For Meghan, who grew up in Los Angeles, her return to Disneyland felt nostalgic. “It’s just so magical,” she said. “I’m a Southern California girl, so being able to go to Disneyland is a lot more accessible than it is for most people, but it’s still the biggest treat in the world.”
She recalled Grad Night, a tradition for high school seniors, as one of her most memorable visits. “Grad night’s all high school seniors, you go after hours, it’s dark—I don’t know why they let us do that! It’s so much fun,” she said.
Harry, meanwhile, was taken back to his own childhood adventures. The Duke shared memories of visiting Disney World in Orlando, Florida, in 1993 with his late mother, Princess Diana, and older brother, Prince William. “I went with my mum and my brother. I remember it very, very well,” he said. “I remember losing it as a kid with all the characters. Like, losing it.”
He continued, saying, “Space Mountain was one of my favorite things,” to which Meghan responded: “Still one of your favorite rides, by the way.” According to Harry, he couldn’t get enough of it during their June visit. “I went round and round and round 10, maybe 12, times,” he said.
Before entering the park, Harry said the kids were already thrilled. “They’re like, ‘This is amazing!’” he recalled with a laugh. “I told them, ‘Guys, this isn’t even the front of it. Prepare yourself. You’re about to be blown away.’”
Once they explored more, Meghan said their son, who was born on May 6, 2019, was already looking forward to his own Disney celebration next year. “For us to be able to have our own childhood memories and then watch that play out through our daughter’s birthday—Archie said, ‘When’s my birthday?’” she noted.
Reflecting on the experience, Harry added, “To see the kids throw themselves into these experiences when they had no idea what they were walking into—it was amazing. It brings out the kid in you again.”
On June 6, Meghan recapped their family trip in an Instagram video montage, set to Peggy Lee’s “It’s a Good Day.” The clip captured snapshots of the foursome in matching Mickey Mouse hats, meeting Elsa from Frozen, and enjoying multiple rides. Harry and Meghan also got their daughter a Little Mermaid-themed birthday cake. “Thank you @disneyland for giving our family two days of pure joy!” Meghan captioned the post.
Harry and Meghan’s appearance on the ABC special came a day after they stepped out for Kevin Costner’s One805LIVE! event in Carpinteria, California.
The couple took the stage to present the Heart of the Community Award to the county fire department’s Peer-to-Peer mental health program. This was their first public joint outing since Harry returned from his visit to the U.K., where he attended different charity events.
