Sonic X Shadow Generations on Switch 2, Speed Finds Its Home

Sonic's remaster meets the power of Nintendo's new console, offering a portable experience that lives up to the home versions
With Sonic X Shadow Generations, one of the most popular titles among fans of the blue hedgehog returns to the scene in a double guise: on the one hand, the classic Generations with a young and modern Sonic; on the other, the new campaign dedicated to Shadow, which explores his powers and tormented past. The re-release now also arrives on Nintendo Switch 2, and manages to maintain all the charm of the living room versions intact, even in the portable format. Although the first generation of Switch often struggled with ambitious porting, the new Nintendo console proves it can keep up with the most powerful machines. Sonic X Shadow Generations runs at a stable frame rate, with fast loading and a visual rendering close to that of the PS5 version. Only by activating the "Quality" mode do you notice some drops in performance, but in "Performance" mode the game flows smoothly even in the most hectic moments.
The result is a title that seems specifically designed for the hybrid nature of the Switch 2: Sonic's fast and fragmented gameplay lends itself perfectly to quick sessions in portable mode. It's no coincidence that the entire Shadow campaign and a good part of Generations can be completed with pleasure away from the TV screen. The real novelty of this re-release is the portion of the game dedicated to Shadow, closer to the concept of a remake than a simple addition. The levels are built around his distinctive powers, and the narrative aims to redefine his character with dramatic tones and more refined direction. For many, it is precisely this section that justifies the return to the track, with well-designed levels and an inspired soundtrack.
The technical success of the porting shows how Switch 2 can finally treat big multiplatform titles with respect. Unlike previous attempts (Generations, Forces, Lost World) on Nintendo consoles, this is the first time that Sonic doesn't seem forced within the limits of the hardware. Even in docked mode, the title performs admirably. The differences with the competition are only noticeable in the finer visual details, but they don't undermine the overall experience.
There is, however, one aspect that leaves a bitter taste in the mouth: the cost. Despite the lack of additional content for those who already owned the original version on Switch, Sonic X Shadow Generations is being re-proposed at the price of 50 euros. There is no upgrade formula or discount dedicated to old users. A choice that could discourage those who were hoping for a more accessible update, especially considering that the new features mainly concern the technical aspect. Sonic X Shadow Generations on Switch 2 is a well-executed porting, which takes full advantage of the capabilities of the new Nintendo console. If you are willing to ignore the lack of substantial new features and the unaccommodating price, you are faced with one of the best portable Sonic experiences ever made. And, perhaps, also a clear signal: the future of the Blue Hedgehog could travel faster than ever even in the palm of your hand.
