Parisi, public institutions need rules on AI

Public regulations on the applications of artificial intelligence are needed: from image analysis to language , large linguistic models (LLMs) are making great strides in speed , and are therefore undoubtedly useful tools for examining large quantities of data, but " they still have no idea of the real world ": this was stated by Nobel laureate Giorgio Parisi at the meeting organized in Forlì by the Associazione Nuova Civiltà delle Macchine (New Civilization of Machines Association), the Associazione Progetto Ruffilli, and the Associazione Alighieri Forlì-Cesena, with the support of the Municipality. Reiterating his proposal for a European Center for Artificial Intelligence , organized along the lines of CERN, Parisi emphasized the need for an organization that fosters collaboration and discussion among European researchers, especially "to understand future evolution ." Besides being clueless about the real world, LLMs can easily fall into error and offer unexplained claims : "All this must be removed from private initiatives ," said the Nobel laureate, citing the increasing reliance on responses provided by Google's Gemini AI when conducting online searches and Elon Musk's Grok AI, which ignores woke language. For this reason, Parisi noted, we need public institutions for regulation and public organizations capable of "producing programs that are freely accessible to citizens." Among the risks, he concluded, is that "without strong investment in this direction, Europe will be left behind."
